CHARTER ITINERARY

7 Days Cruising the British Virgin Islands by Yacht

A 7 day British Virgin Islands yacht charter itinerary from Tortola through Norman Island, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke in one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated sailing grounds.

A Caribbean yacht charter works best where distances are short and anchorages are close. The British Virgin Islands offer exactly that. Steady trade winds, clear line-of-sight navigation and a tight cluster of islands make this one of the most reliable cruising regions in the Caribbean.

Here, the rhythm feels natural. Mornings begin with an easy reach across open water. Afternoons end in protected bays where white sand meets calm, turquoise sea.

Over the course of a week, you move between volcanic islands and low coral atolls, each with its own character. Line-of-sight navigation between islands keeps sailing relaxed and intuitive, making the BVI particularly well-suited to a one-week yacht charter.

Day 1 – Tortola to Norman Island

Distance: ~10 nautical miles south

Depart Tortola and head south across the Sir Francis Drake Channel. The sail is short but sets the tone for the week, with steady breeze and clear Caribbean water beneath the keel. Anchor at The Bight on Norman Island. Spend the afternoon snorkelling at The Caves, where rock formations open into shallow grottoes filled with reef fish.

Nearby, the rock pinnacles known as The Indians offer one of the best snorkelling sites in the British Virgin Islands, with colourful coral and dense schools of tropical fish. As evening settles, yachts gather quietly around the bay while the surrounding hills shelter the anchorage from swell.

Our Tortola yacht charter tip: Snorkel the famous caves just west of the anchorage. The underwater tunnels and coral walls are among the most popular snorkelling spots in the BVI.

Day 2 – Norman Island to Virgin Gorda

Distance: ~22 nautical miles north-east

Sail north-east toward Virgin Gorda. The channel opens, and the breeze freshens, often creating a satisfying morning sail.

Anchor near Spanish Town and tender ashore to explore The Baths, where massive granite boulders form natural pools and narrow passages along the shoreline. Swim between sunlit rock formations and shaded tidal pools before continuing later in the day toward a quieter anchorage such as Leverick Bay in North Sound.

Day 3 – Virgin Gorda to Anegada

Distance: ~15 nautical miles north

Cruise north to Anegada, the only coral island in the British Virgin Islands. The approach is shallow and requires careful navigation, but the reward is a completely different landscape from the mountainous islands to the south.

Anchor near Setting Point and head ashore or by taxi toward Loblolly Bay, where coral reefs protect calm, turquoise water ideal for snorkelling. Anegada feels wide and open with long beaches and a mesmerisingly uninterrupted horizon. Dinner here often means freshly caught lobster served at relaxed beachside restaurants – delicious.

Day 4 – Anegada to Jost Van Dyke

Distance: ~30 nautical miles south-west

Jost van Dyke British Virgin Islands yacht charter

This is the longest sail of the itinerary. Depart early and cross open water back toward the western end of the island chain.

Anchor at Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke and take the tender across to nearby White Bay, known for its bright sand and luminous turquoise water. Swim ashore or walk along the beach where palm trees lean over the shoreline.

Our top Jost Van Dyke yacht charter tip: Stop at the legendary Soggy Dollar Bar, home of the original Painkiller cocktail and a long-standing favourite stop for sailors in the BVI.

Day 5 – Jost Van Dyke to Peter Island

Distance: ~12 nautical miles south-east

Cruise back across the Sir Francis Drake Channel toward Peter Island. The distance is short, and the sailing is relaxed.

Anchor at Deadman’s Bay, where a long stretch of sand sits beneath low green hills. The bay lies beside Peter Island Resort, one of the most exclusive private island retreats in the British Virgin Islands, giving the anchorage a refined and peaceful atmosphere.

Day 6 – Peter Island to Cooper Island

Distance: ~8 nautical miles east

Cooper ISLAND BVI luxury yacht hotspot

Another short cruise today on your British Virgin Islands yacht charter, this time bringing you to Cooper Island, where clear water and protected bays make for an easy afternoon at anchor. Snorkel at Cistern Point, where reef fish move between rocky coral outcrops beneath the surface. Nearby, Cooper Island Beach Club offers relaxed waterfront dining and a well-known rum bar popular with visiting yachts.

Day 7 – Cooper Island to Tortola

Distance: ~45 nautical miles north-east

Return west toward Tortola. The sail is relaxed and often downwind with views back across the islands visited throughout the week. Pause for a final swim stop before entering the marina. Gradually, the open bays give way to docks and harbour activity as the charter comes to an easy close.

Why a British Virgin Islands Yacht Charter Works So Well

A BVI yacht charter itinerary is defined by balance. Open-water sailing sits comfortably alongside protected anchorages, while lively beach stops contrast with quiet bays.

Distances are long enough to feel purposeful yet short enough to remain relaxed. Over a seven-day Tortola yacht charter, the islands begin to connect into a single cruising ground shaped by trade winds, reefs, and sheltered channels.  It is exactly this combination of reliable sailing and beautiful anchorages that continues to make the BVI one of the most beloved yacht charter destinations in the Caribbean.
